A misleading name perhaps as during summer up to six of these trips leave per day at 9.15am, 11.00am, 12.30pm, 2.00pm, 3.30pm and 5.00pm. The trip takes 3 ½ hours. After being fitted out with glacier boots at the company office, a 10 minute bus ride takes you to within 2 kilometres (1 1/2 miles) of the glacier. The walk to the glacier is intentionally slow, with guides calling stops to explain features of the environment and answer questions. The trip proceeds on to the terminal face of the glacier for approximately 1½ hours (conditions permitting). The terrain can look daunting but be assured, the pre-formed access-ways make it achievable for most agile people in the 5-60 year age range. Hundreds of sprightly seniors and toddlers in backpacks have enjoyed the experience. We always climb down the same way we went up as it is rarely possible to find two feasible access routes on the ever-changing glacier. Fitness level: Moderate fitness required. Involves uphill walking. Availability: Daily (except Christmas Day) Cost includes: Ground transport, guide, boots and socks, crampons, raincoat, alpenstock Please bring: Warm clothing for your personal comfort and sun protection. A day pack is useful and a drink and snacks are recommended. Be sure to bring your camera.
